Valentine
Hearts
This
pattern is for three different sized hearts.
The smallest really needs no stuffing,
though it is possible to do if you
like it to have a more full appearance.
The smallest ones, I designed to be
part of a garland, but of course, you
can do whatever you want with them.
These
hearts are easy to make, easy to
customize, and easy to love! Perfect for
beginners who want t practice increasing and
decreasing, they'll fly off your needle in
no time. This is also a good proect
for beginners, because tension is relatively
unimportant, so you can take whatever yarn
and needles you have, and start right
away. The only guideline I'd offer is
to use a relatively tight tension, to
prevent the stuffing from showing through or
leaking out; this is especially important if
you're giving this as a gift for a
small child, as the stuffing can be a
choking hazard.
Materials
- A small amount of red or pink yarn, or whatever color your heart desires!
- A crochet hook in the size required to make a tight tension with the yarn you chose. I used a size D with sport weight/ dk yarn.
- Polyfil, cotton, wool roving, or whatever you'd like to stuff the hearts with.
- Place markers, if desired.
- Scissors
- Darning/yarn needle
The
Pattern
These
hearts begin with the Magic Loop Method.
This is where you take the end of
the yarn, fold it back on itself to
make a loop, and crochet into the loop
instead of chaining and crocheting into
that. The benefit of this method is
that it creates an adjustable loop, so
long as you leave the tail of the
yarn free. Crochet into the loop, making
sure to crochet over the tail of the
yarn, but leaving some free at the same
time. Then tug on the free tail of
the yarn until the loop closes. At the
end of the project, weave in the tail,
and you're done!
To
begin, using the Magic Loop Method, chain
2 and work 6 half-double crochet (hdc)
into the loop. Do not join the round.
This is the base.
For
small heart
- Work 2 hdc into each stitch (12 total). Cut thread
- Work one more base and work step one again, but don't cut the thread.
- Arrange the pieces so that the last stitches worked are adjacent. Crochet into the next stitch and work around so that the two pieces are connected. (total of 24 stitches)
- Work 1 round with no increases or decreases. (24)
- Work *1 hdc in next stitch, decrease (make one hdc span 2 stitches)* for 1 round (12)
- Work *decrease* around (6) Break Thread and weave in all ends.
For
medium heart
- Make a base, and work 2 hdc into each stitch (12)
- Work *1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch* around (18)
- Work *1 hdc in the next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch* around (24) Cut thread
- Make another base and repeat steps 1-3, but do not cut thread.
- Arrange the pieces so that the last stitches worked are adjacent. Crochet into the next stitch and work around so that the two pieces are connected. (total of 48 stitches)
- Work no increases or decreases for 3 rounds (48). This is a good time to start stuffing, before the hole gets too small to reach the tops of the heart.
- Work *1 hdc in next 2 stitches, decrease (make one hdc span 2 stitches)* for 1 round (36)
- Work *1 hdc in next stitch, decrease* for 1 round (24)
- Work *decrease* for 1 round (12) This is a good time to finish stuffing, because after this, the hole will be much, much too small to fit any stuffing through.
- Work *decrease* for 1 round (6) Break thread and weave in all ends
For
Large Heart
- Make a base, and work 2 hdc into each stitch (12)
2.
Work *1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc
in next stitch* around (18)
- Work *1 hdc in the next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch* around (24)
- Work *1 hdc in the next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch* around (36) Cut thread.
5.Make
another base and repeat steps 1-4, but
do no cut thread.
6.
Arrange the pieces so that the last
stitches worked are adjacent. Crochet into
the next stitch and work around so that
the two pieces are connected. (total of
72 stitches)
7.Work
no increases or decreases for 5 rounds
(72). This is a good time to start
stuffing, before the hole gets too small
to reach the tops of the heart.
8.
Work *1 hdc in next 2 stitches,
decrease (make one hdc span 2 stitches)*
for 1 round (60)
9.
Work *1 hdc in next 3 stitches,
decrease* for 1 round (48)
10.
Work *1 hdc in next 2 stitches,
decrease* for 1 round (36)
- Work *1 hdc in next stitch, decrease* for 1 round (24)
- Work *decrease* for 1 round (12) This is a good point to finish stuffing, because next round, the hole will be far too small to fit any stuffing through.
- Work *decrease* for 1 round (6) Cut thread, weave in all ends, and enjoy!
